Furnished Fluid, Programmable Materials

Akira Wakita

FF (Furnished Fluid): A real time video work suggesting the likelihood of liquid simulation, a high technology seemingly unrelated to everyday life, being accepted into our common living spaces. Creating the furniture surrounding us like desks and chairs, it burns out the exquisitely complex flow of the ecosystem in a way that can never be seen by the naked eye.

PM (Programmable Materials): New materials whose color and shape are programmable by computer signals. This time on exhibit is a composite textile formed by combining micro-encapsulated liquid crystal ink with conductive fibers. Just taking the sample in hand and watching the change in color offers a place from which the near future of both fashion and interiors as lifestyle experience is imaginable.

Akira Wakita

Computational designer

Akira Wakita utilizes design tools that apply fluid dynamic technique and materials programmable in shape or color to continuously study and promote the points of contact between technology and design. His research has been exhibited at venues such as the National Art Center Tokyo, the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, Ars Electronica Center, SIGGRAPH and more. A Keio University SFC professor and Chairperson of the X-Design program in the Graduate School.
